For some, it was their first visit to Greenbooth Reservoir, but even after multiple trips, its stunning fir trees and breathtaking views never fail to impress. As we walked, the group shared stories of 'Mummers'—people who, on New Year's Eve in Lancashire, would blacken their faces with soot and enter homes, scrubbing fireplaces while humming and expecting payment.
These tales bring local history to life, sparking fond childhood memories and reminding us of our roots.
We also chatted about how tap water contains 4.9 microplastic fragments per liter, while bottled water averages a shocking 240,000 (Academy of Sciences, 2024). Luckily, the UK’s water treatment removes 99.9% of these particles, but it made us appreciate the days of ‘Corporation pop’ and the rare treat of cordial.
During a one-minute listening exercise, we tuned in to the rustling trees, distant farm machinery, and the peaceful lapping of the reservoir. It’s a grounding experience that calms the mind, if only briefly, before we compare sketches and continue on our walk.
Later, at the sandstone rocks, we spent time making rubbings of their textures and cracks, connecting with nature through art. These images will inspire us as we compose the sound for the community posts.
We talked about the fact that tap water has 4.9 fragments per liter of microplastics and bottled water has an average of 240,000. (Research from the Academy of Sciences in 2024) The water treatment process in the UK removes 99.9% of microplastics from our drinking water We spoke about growing up with 'Corporation Pop' and how even added cordial was a treat to be savoured.
